The part of the Velo nebula catalogued as NGC 6992 is a supernova remnant, thus representing the remains of a supernova that exploded about 1470 light years away. Although the explosion occurred thousands of years ago, it is still possible today to photograph its remnants expanding at speeds of tens of km/s. It is thought that within a few millennia this 'wonder' of the boreal sky will disappear, because a high expansion velocity also corresponds to a high rate of dispersion of its matter, which will soon exhaust its energy received during the explosion, and disperse into the interstellar medium, 'almost' without a trace. It is a vast diffuse nebula visible in the south-eastern part of the constellation Swan, and the discovery of this object was made by William Herschel in 1784.
