Heart Nebula ic1805 is a vast area of ionised hydrogen in association with several open star clusters and its distance is estimated to be about 7500 light years from the solar system. Its main characteristic is the presence of two large areas, apparently empty but actually rich in ionised oxygen, of different sizes, which make the nebula resemble a ‘heart’. Within it is a system of small, loosely concentrated open clusters, which are responsible for the ionisation of the nebula. The most remarkable of these is Melotte 15, which contains some stars about 50 times more massive than our Sun.
