Horsehead and Flame Nebulae
The Horsehead (B33) and Flame (NGC2024) nebulae can be spotted in the constellation Orion near the very bright star Aniitak.
B33 is a nebula consisting of dense dark dust whose shape resembles that of a horse's head. Behind it looms an immense cloud (IC434) originating from hydrogen ionised by radiation from the star Sigma Orionis. In the immediate vicinity of Anlitak we have the diffuse nebula Fiamma whose main physical feature, which also gives it its name, is a large dark band of dust that crosses it from north to south, gradually widening and giving the bright part of the nebula a flame shape.
Orion's molecular nebula complex is the result of a perspective game as it is located at a distance of about 1500 light years from our solar system while the star Anlitak is about 800 light years away.
