M81 and M82 in Ha RGB
First lights from my 2600 Duo!
M81 (Bode's Galaxy)
M81 is a classical spiral galaxy located around 12 million light-years away in the constellation of the Big Dipper. With its bright nucleus and well-defined spiral arms, it is one of the most photogenic galaxies in the sky. In HaRGB imaging, the Hα regions reveal areas of intense star formation located mainly along the spiral arms. Its majestic structure and luminous bulge stand out particularly well in RGB, with yellowish hues in the centre and blue in the spiral arms.
M82 (Cigar Galaxy)
M82, located at the same distance as M81, is an irregular starburst galaxy, known for its intense star formation activity and spectacular filaments of ionised hydrogen ejected perpendicular to the galactic disc. In HaRGB, the Hα emissions reveal vast jets of reddish gas expelled by violent star formation, a consequence of the gravitational interaction with M81. Unlike M81, which is a beautiful symmetrical spiral, M82 has a chaotic structure, with dark bands of dust and a very bright centre dominated by young, massive stars.
