Also known as the Flaming Star Nebula or SH2-229 or C 31 is a diffuse nebula visible in the constellation Auriga.
It is an elusive nebula to direct observation, but very evident in long exposure photos, located 1630 light years away; in its direction is a blue star of fifth magnitude, known as AE Aurigae, a variable and enigmatic star: it is said to be one of the so-called ‘runaway’ stars, because they were born in the region of the Orion Nebula about 2.7 million years ago and ‘escaped’ from there, dispersing into the Milky Way. IC 405 shines because of the radiation received from AE Aurigae, which ionises its gases and gives it a red colour; the blue patches are due to the reflection of the star's blue light on the dark dust.
IC 405 appears to be connected with other nebula systems, in particular IC 410, visible one degree southeast; in reality they are much more distant objects.
