NGC 896 – Fish Head Nebula
This nebula is located about 7,500 light years away from us, in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is the western part of the larger IC 1805, the famous Heart Nebula. NGC 896 is the brightest area of the entire structure: in fact, it was the first to be discovered, in 1787, by William Herschel.
It is an emission nebula, i.e. a cloud of ionised gas that glows thanks to the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the young stars inside it. Inside it are very young star clusters, which are shaping the cloud with their stellar winds and past explosions.
Its “fish head” appearance is due to dense, irregular areas of gas and dust, illuminated and sculpted by the light of newborn stars.
