The Anima Nebula is a vast emission nebula located approximately 6,000-7,500 light years from Earth. It is located in the constellation Cassiopeia and is famous for forming a pair with the nearby Heart Nebula (IC 1805).
It is an H II region, which means that it is composed mainly of ionised hydrogen (HII), illuminated by the energetic radiation of the young hot stars forming within it.
The nebula is a vast stellar “nursery”, an active region of star formation. The stars within the complex are less than a few million years old.
Star cluster: it contains an open star cluster, known by the same designation IC 1848.
It is located in the Perseus spiral arm of our galaxy, the Milky Way, an arm further from the galactic centre than the one that hosts our Sun.
Appearance: the nebula has intricate structures of gas and dust, sculpted by the stellar winds of newly born massive stars.
