The Crab Nebula (M1) is located in the constellation Taurus and is about 6,500 light years away from our solar system. It is the remnant of a supernova that appeared in all its splendour in 1054. It was first observed as a nebula in 1731 by John Bevis, but its name was coined by William Parsons, who drew it in 1840 in the shape of a crab. At its centre is a pulsar (neutron star) with a diameter of about 30 km, often used as a calibration in X-ray astronomy.
