This is a planetary nebula visible in the constellation Serpens Cauda.
It is located in the northern part of the constellation, within the Aquila Gap, approximately 4° NNE of the star η Serpentis; it extends for 8 arcminutes towards a region of the Milky Way with few star fields and can be observed using special filters. The best time to observe it in the evening sky is between June and November; as it lies just 1° from the celestial equator, it can be observed equally well from all populated regions of the Earth.
The nebula has a very irregular shape due to its particular position; interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium has in fact caused a Rayleigh–Taylor instability, which accounts for its shape. Its progenitor star is a white dwarf situated off-centre relative to the centre of the nebula; its distance is estimated to be between 390 and 880 light-years from the Solar System, compared with the 650–1,650 light-years estimated for the nebula itself. This makes this nebula, together with SH2-174, an excellent subject for testing theories on the interaction between planetary nebulae and the surrounding interstellar medium.
