This shot depicts an emission nebula visible in the constellation Swan about 7500 light years away.
It is located in the northern part of the constellation, about 2.5° north-west of the bright star Deneb; the best period for its observation in the evening sky falls between July and December.
It is an H II region of considerable extension with an oval shape and crossed in a northwest-southeast direction by a dark band that apparently divides it into two equal parts: the eastern part is dominated by the presence of a small open cluster, known as Berkeley 90, with which it is physically associated.
Also visible in the framed field is the small emission nebula SH2-116.
This nebula has a circular shape, so much so that it is listed in the Sharpless catalogue as a possible planetary nebula. However, a 1991 study clarified that it is in fact an H II region.
