The Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070)
The Tarantula Nebula is one of the most impressive star-forming regions in our galactic neighbourhood. It lies some 160,000 light-years away from us in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighbouring galaxy to our Milky Way.
Countless new stars are forming within its vast gas clouds, including some of the most massive and hottest stars we know of. Spanning over 1,000 light-years, its dimensions are almost beyond imagination.
What makes it special is that, unfortunately, we cannot observe this fascinating nebula from Central Europe. Only a journey far to the south grants us a view of this impressive object.
This image was taken during my last astrophotography workshop in Namibia, beneath an incredibly dark starry sky.
Anyone who has ever stood beneath Namibia’s starry sky will understand why I am drawn back there time and again. In 2027, I will return once more with a group of enthusiastic astrophotographers, and I am already looking forward to unforgettable nights beneath this unique starry sky.
I’m particularly delighted that this image will also feature in my 2027 astrophotography calendar.
