MELOTTE 15
The Heart Nebula (IC 1805 or Sh2-190) is about 7500 light years away from us and is located in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is an emission nebula showing glowing ionised hydrogen gas and darker dust bands. The nebula's intense red emission and its morphology are driven by radiation emanating from a small group of stars near the centre of the nebula. This open cluster of stars, known as Melotte 15, contains a few bright stars almost 50 times the mass of our Sun and many other faint stars that are only a fraction of the mass of our Sun.
The Melotte Catalogue includes 245 deep sky objects, arranged on both hemispheres, especially open and globular clusters. It was compiled in 1915 by astronomer Philibert Jacques Melotte. The large amount of hydrogen in the area was a major contributor to the birth of this star cluster a few million years ago.
